As Libya revolts, Moammar Gadhafi’s fate isn’t the only thing hanging in the balance. Here, other critical ways the rest of us might feel the turmoil:

• Oil panic sparks record prices
  Africa’s third-largest oil producer, Libya also has the continent’s largest proven oil reserves. The prospect of a civil war or government overthrow helped send oil prices this week to their highest levels since September 2008. “The sky’s the limit,” analysts told Britain’s The Independent, and oil could top the $147-a-barrel record “without breaking a sweat.” Crude hit $108.70 a barrel in Europe on Monday, and U.S. prices rose to $96 a barrel. “There’s no need to panic” yet, says Yale’s Jeffrey Garten. But if this unrest spreads to Saudi Arabia, we’ll have a “real nightmare scenario.”

• The EU gets swamped with African refugees
  As part of its recent thaw in relations with Europe, Gadhafi’s government agreed to help stem the flow of illegal immigration from Africa to Europe. The Libyan leader has already threatened to pull out of the deal if the EU backs the protesters, and all bets are off if Gadhafi falls. Italy and Malta are especially concerned, as Tunisians are already flooding in. If Libya collapses, the wave of refugees would be “unimaginable,” says Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini. “Those who spoke of hundreds of thousands… are not exaggerating.”

No wonder the allure of a press release. Flip a word here and there, massage some copy and here you go, an article ready for publication.

Not so fast.

England’s Media Standards Trust has released a “churn engine” that lets readers compare articles to press releases to see whether what they’re reading is actually independently reported. Some results can be seen here and examples run the gamut from science to royal family reporting.

As the Guardian notes:

A new website promises to shine a spotlight on “churnalism” by exposing the extent to which news articles have been directly copied from press releases.

The website, churnalism.com, created by charity the Media Standards Trust, allows readers to paste press releases into a “churn engine”. It then compares the text with a constantly updated database of more than 3m articles. The results, which give articles a “churn rating”, show the percentage of any given article that has been reproduced from publicity material…

…In a typical example, the Express, Mirror and Sun all lifted of chunks of text from a press release last month on behalf of the Benenden Healthcare Society, which quoted a poll showing ‘British women spend more money on their looks than their health’. The Daily Mail copied 98% of the text directly from the press release.

And it shows what Walker is really interested in here: He is not opposed, in principle, to powerful interest groups having the ear of the politicians they depend on, and who depend on them. He just wants those interest groups to be the conservative interest groups that fund him, and that he depends on.

Both male and female players reported playing Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy and NHL (National Hockey League) games. Males also listed the fighting games Call of Duty and Tekken in their top five. Females preferred playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band or the go-kart game Mario Kart to the violent videos, according to the study. The researchers showed 150 images — positive, neutral and negative — to the study volunteers. Bowen said some of the images were violent and disturbing, such as a picture of a man holding gun to a woman’s head.

An hour later, the researchers showed the study volunteers the images again, but randomly mixed in additional pictures as distracters. If video gamers’ brains had been desensitized from playing video games, the researchers theorized that they should be less able to recall the violent images.

But they found no differences in recall between the two groups. And, the gamers and non-gamers reported similar levels of physical arousal from the images, and described similar feelings when viewing the photos.
